Don’s Tips: Winter Cheer

Apple Mint

Winter can be a depressing time in the garden – some gardens are bleak and bare over winter.

However, there are some truly awesome plants that are at their best now:

There are winter flowering peaches in red or white or pink.  There are flowering quinces which produce deep red, or orange or pink and white flowers on a 2m tall shrub.  Magnolias are flowering now and the newer magnolias varieties have truly HUGE flowers.

As an ornamental groundcover, variegated apple mint is looking superb right now.

And there are wattles, azaleas, camellias, diosmas, hellebores, pansies, clivias, daffodils, jonquils, orange trumpet creeper and so much more.

It’s easy to create a garden that is spectacular in winter.  Just growing an orange trumpet creeper over the fence will transform your back and front yard.

Winter in the garden can be spectacular!
