Don’s Tips: Summer Problems

Summer is an awesome time of the year with the beach, the cricket and holidays.

But many plants suffer badly from lack of water and too much overpowering sunlight… Yes, plants do get sunburnt and this causes leaf and bark dieback.

So, a few tips:

1. Get a soil wetting agent from your local nursery or hardware store. Use it immediately.

2. Make sure that all of your gardens are mulched to minimise water evaporation.

3. Move delicate pot plants like orchids, ferns, azaleas, camellias, many palms, clivias etc. into part shade. Protection from the midday sun is vital… only mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun… remember?

4. Water lawns deeply (i.e. for 30-40 minutes minimum) once a week during dry periods too.

Put a sprinkler on the lawn on a hot day and let the kids play under it. Both the kids and the lawn will be grateful.

Hooroo! Don.
