My favorite road side stalls are in the Victorian and NSW border region. When we were on holiday along the Murray River at Cobram we picked up a brochure called "The Farm Gate Trail". This brochure had a map of the most wonderful farms to visit where you could pick your own fruit or use a road side stall, visit a winery or see the cheese actually being made on a diary farm. There was also a local brewery and an almond and honey place. There were also some really different things such as a rose farm, a lavender farm and a cactus farm. We had the best time and met some real characters - I highly recommend it.

I know a great roadside shop in Nashdale, near Orange. It is called 'Thornbrook Orchards' 39 Nashdale Lane (off Cargo Rd at Nashdale school).

They sell fruit from December to June and have eating cherries, sour morello (cooking) cherries, peaches, plums, nectarines, apricots, black muscat grapes, figs and apples all in season. The fruit is fresh and tasty and you can buy through an honesty system if the owners are off picking!

If you have a group you can even pick your own cherries - ring beforehand, Janet on 0428 653 145. Coaches are also welcome and some people come up on a coach from Sydney each year.

The speciality items they stock are the morello cherries which are hard to find and are used for cooking, preserving and making liquers; black muscat grapes which are a dark, very sweet eating grape; and white figs which you would not see in the shops today - they are not picked until ripe and are amazing!

You can contact the owners Janet and Arthur Treweek on (02) 6365 3145 or Janet 0428653145, Arthur 0427653389.

They have information on the following web sites which also have lots of information about the Orange area - a great place to go for a holiday especially if you are into food and wine.

Or
you can google 'thornbrook orchards' to find more sites.

If you are lucky enough to live or you are travelling through Coffs Harbour there are many farms who sell banana's, avocado's, mangoes, other fruits on the road to Central Bucca, I have also bought young banana leaves for cooking. Out along the Dairyville road there is small stall where they sell flowers & fruit & veg. So have a nice weekened drive & stock up.

Mangrove Mountain has the best citrus stalls around the Gosford area especially in winter when prices are outrageous in supermarkets for those heavy Navel oranges, even when they are grown so close by! Mangrove Mountain stalls have realistic prices and the fruit is nice and fresh, not like in the shops. We go for a country drive up the mountain periodically over winter and get beaut oranges (and other citrus sometimes).

There is a stall along North Bonville Road, just south of Coffs Harbour where the beekeeper sells fresh delicious honey from his own bees. Very reasonably priced as well.

Anyone know of any local produce stalls or places where cheap fruit and vege can be purchased near the Penrith (NSW) Area? I have heard there is one in Penrith on a Friday morning but not sure of the where abouts, time and also if it is still around?

I'm not sure if this is exactly roadside stalls or not.

But I love to get my fresh free range eggs from Nulkaba Hatchery, they also have their own honey, spatchcocks, duck, big chooks and occaisionally mulberry jam.

Also Tinklers in pokolbin have figs, avocados, plums, peaches etc........best to ring before as everything is seasonal and sometimes they have failed crops due to bugs!
I pick up whatever is around when I can.

Also theres a lot of stalls in and around the main road in Cooranbong......not to mention the man who sells veg and herb plants cheap.

When we're not busy eating healthy us Grey Nomads are notorious for sniffing out good bakeries.

Last year in Lismore we found a roadside bakery trailer in the centre of town.

Complete with seats under the trees we enjoyed a couple of really good pies.

Nice town.
