Re-painting a fibro garage

Posted 1336 days ago

Hello! Does anyone have any tips about repainting a fibro garage. what precautions do I need to take? Or is the fibro ok to just lightly sand and repaint. I also need to paint the eaves which I also think is fibro, should I be kitted up to sand?
Appreciate all input, thank you.

I am not qualified to answer your question but if it were me I would make very sure I took every step necessary to ensure I didn't breathe in any of that stuff onto my lungs. Get some qualified advice before you start....please.

DONT SAND IT!! At least not untill you have had it properly tested. But painting should be fine if the fibro is in good condition. If it is aspestos, you can seal it with a specialty sealant available from most hardware stores. Aspestos is relitively safe when undisturbed, but Workplace Health and Safety can tell you who is registered to work with it in your area and they will be able to tell you more.

Asbestos is a insideouse clandestine substance waiting for the uninformed to come along. 147000 australians have died of asbestos related injuries since 1947, 600 to 900 are diagnosed with asbestos related illness each year

ASBESTOS KILLS.

There are books available from the government on how to deal with asbestos products.

wear full body suits and masks if you intend to cut or sand it, make sure it is damp to minimise dust.

Dont become another victim

until you have had it properly testedGood advice, but how do I go about this?

I am very new to this renovating game . I have eaves which are probably asbestos based plus maybe one or both of the side fences, plus maybe also under the kitchen vinyl which I want to replace - the house dates from the early 70's.

Before I do anything at all I want someone to come and check out what asbestos is where. Can someone tell me what sort of expert this would be and how I would find them? The council wasn't too helpful.Would it be some sort of testing laboratory or an asbestos removal company or some sort of building inspector?

People with old houses do change their vinyl, floorcoverings, paint their houses etc so there must be a safe way - I just need some guidelines as to who to approach.

The house is double brick on a concrete slab and I am in Western Australia and told that asbestos based products were in use right until the early 80's at least.

I have had a family member die of asbestos related disease so I want to err on the side of caution.

The workplace health and safety office in your area, just call 12455 and they will put you through to them, they can tell you who is licenced to work with Aspestos, once you know who can work with it, they should be able to tell you how to get it tested.
It is at its most dangerous when unstable - especially with sanding, cutting and breaking and moving it.
I don't know about WA, but QLD regs let builders remove up to about 10sq metres, any more and they have to get professionals in. There are also regulations on where you can dump it and how, what has to be worn, and when you can return to the house.
Painting it generally wont destabilise it, however if you are moving skirtings etc it can.
With the fences and any outdoor Aspestos (inc rooves), if there is any mold/moss growing on it, the roots can start to break it down and this can become a problem, there are products to seal it to stop this happening.
and the floor - it might be safer just to lay more lino on top, rather than disturb what you dont know is underneath.
Bathrooms are another problem area, Aspestos was often used as a waterproofing sheeting.
Hope this helps.
