Community water savings

Posted 1704 days ago

My downhill neighbour has built a new home with large storage tanks which he cannot fill in Adelaide.

Uphill neighours are happy to divert their stormwater inside the street boundary by a common collection pipe under a neighbourhood agreement to pump collected back for our garden use.

I was wondering if this is legal and what we would need to do to get Mitcham council approval for such a scheme?

Hey JoanParsons:),

Recently in discussions with an environmental plumber he advised me that the Federal Government has a ban on the harvesting of any storm water [UNDERLINE]runoff[/UNDERLINE] due to health and safety issues (this because you don't know what the water picks up as it runs along the ground- people could accidently drink it..etc..etc)...additionally there is a logic from many councils that storm water runoff does not belong to you...but the entire community....this is why many farms actually have to pay to have a dam and the council charges you for what you store...(thus the reason I have a 250,000 litre pond!)

As far as I am aware the only water that you are allow to store is rainwater that goes down your drain pipe and straight into a tank.

However the best idea for you is to simply call your local council and ask!

Miracle;)

We are yet to see problems caused by tank water.

Old timers who collected roof water, did various tricks like few spoons of kero or some other homemade treatments.

Now the unsuspecting new collectors of water and their plastic tanks can harbour and breed all sorts of diseases even without of collecting the stormwater from street drains.
