Deck Posted 500 days ago Hi
I have a decking oil problem and would appreciate any clues. A week ago I oiled my deck. The next day I went to put the second coat on as recommended on the tin (Wattyl Estapol Timber and decking oil) but found that as soon as I applied it a scummy residue appeared. I rang the Wattyl customer service line and was told that this had occured because I had not left enough time for the deck to dry after I had mopped it and had locked water into the wood which seemed to react once the second coat was appplied. But I do not believe this to be the cause as there was part of the deck which I did not apply the oil to until the next day (ie 36 hours later) which still seems to react in exactly the same way as soon as I commence the second coat - it is a frosted/bubbly reaction that I can scrape off with my fingernail. The Wattyl hotline are still of the belief that it has something to do with water in the wood and believe it is mandatory that I put the second coat on but I know it will go all bubbly. They recommended I sand the whole lot back and start again - this would be an enormous job as the deck spans the entire stretch of the house. My inclination is to not worry about doing two coats and to leave it for 6 months to allow the oil to evaporate and do another coat then. Has any one had a similar reaction when they have gone to apply the second coat.
Would be interested to know.
Thanks, deb |

RE: Deck Posted 499 days ago I had what sounds like a similar problem not with a deck, but with some timber furnature I was sealing with decking oil. It was because I stirred the oil too much before applying it. left the tin for a few days then tried again.
The first result was sort of bubbly and white, but no scum.
Dont know if this is the same as what you are seeing. _________ :) |

RE: Deck Posted 497 days ago Let deck weather the oil coating down. I'd use intergrain Ultradek and recoat. Ensure you wash deck with oxylic acid wash before coating and follow can instruction. recommend calling intergrain as deck coating is a specialised artform! _________ GROW HARD OR GROW HOME |
