What should I oil my new merbu deck with????

Posted 937 days ago

We have just had a merbu deck laid under our new pergola, measuring 10 by 6 metres. I want to know should I oil it with a water based natural oil or not? I have bought some aqua deck oil which is a water based oil but after reading some info on the net about these products I am wondering if I should return it and get the oil based one instead. PLEASE HELP!!!! I really dont want to have to sand the whole deck back in the future before recoating which is what alot of people have said I will have to do, it is quite a large area to have to do that!

I want to just bring out the natural colour in the wood and do not want a plastic like coating on my new deck.

One of the bset timber treatments for timber and to retain the natural look of the timber grain is Tung Oil. East to apply and your timber will thankyou. Another good brand name to try is Feast & Watson.

go the Feast & Watson - I used it on my deck (was recommended to me at the timber yard) and it has gone really well so far (2 years on).

I would suggest you research ecowood oil - it is an all natural product made from pine oil, bee's wax and more. I've been in the construction industry for over 25years and I have never come across a product so good for new timber.

There are two steps - the intial product is simply painted or rolled on (smells like pine oil) just apply 2 coats and let dry. What happens is that it forms a waxy skin over the timber which will prevent moisture entering the timber but it will still allow it the dry and leach.

After 3 months simply apply the next step directlty to the timber. You may need to wash it down but it is very simple.

Great product and good luck
