Faulty Water Level!!!!!!!!!

Posted 777 days ago

Hi, I was using a water level yesterday with a 10mm inside diameter with an assistant in the wind so the level was fluctuating slightly, it eventually settled and I made my mark and cut the post, however when I placed the beam on top of the post I had a gap of roughly 3mm. The hose had always been a bit shorter than I would have liked (5 metres) so today I went out and purchased a 12mm inside diameter hose 12 metres long. I syphoned coloured water into it to make sure there were no air bubble and I checked along the hose to make doubly sure. I held the two ends together and noticed that one level was around 4mm lower that the other, I jiggled the hose around rechecked for air bubbles as did my assistant and all appeared OK. I checked again and found the same fault so took the hose inside out of any wind and rechecked - same thing, one level was lower than the other! I took the hose into the garage jiggled it again, strapped it to a board, left it for half an hour, rechecked it and found the same thing, one water level is around 4mm lower than the other. I am at a loss. The ends are not covered, there are no kings or air bubbles in the hose, there is no wind etc etc yet I have the same problem. It does not make logical sence to me. I'm sure water finds it's own level!!!!!!!! Does anyone have any answers? Thanks in advance.

RE: Faulty Water Level!!!!!!!!!

I have found the answer. Because it was a new PVC tube there are oils etc inside the tube that are used in the manufacture of the tube so it creates uneven water tension inside the tube. So I ran a few litres of warm soapy water through the tube and then flushed it out with cold water, now it's perfect! So be warned, if you make a water level from new tube (or any tube) rinse it out and check it before you start marking levels.
