Gravel driveways

Posted 925 days ago

Hi guys
I'm interested in your views on gravel driveways. I know they are very popular in the northern hemisphere (just thinking about all those english cottage gardens you see on tv) but you don't see many around in Australia. When I was a kid, we had one for a little while (before we got stamped concrete) and I hated it because the gravel was quite pointy. But I am planning my own driveway now and really like the look of those round, white rocks. Any thoughts?

hellorosie, spray area with glyphoste first to kill any weeds then put down a weed mat before laying gravel.would be pretty hard on the knees when weeding. you would at least hear anyone coming up the driveway.

hellorosie, I myself would not have a gravel driveway. We purchased a nice old 1870's cottage 18 months ago with a nice cottage garden only to discover that the entire yard had been covered in the disused house carpet and that had been covered in white gravel to make it look pretty. Unfortunatey after a few years of dirt flying around it is now under a mountain of soil, which is nearly too heavy too lift, so I have to employ a gardener to lift it all out (gravel included) to let it go back to a "normal" backyard where I can plant things. I strongly recommemd pavers or cement.

Round rocks would probably be bad choice, as they do not provide much friction, as they do not seem to interlock well.

Sharp stones lock well, but might be hard on tyres.

Stone small gravel can be compacted, but rain can dislodge and wash away.

But if you like it, you will drive carefully and it should be OK.
