Hedge Removal Posted 178 days ago Does anyone know an easy way to remove a hedge? I don't know what the plants are but they are well established and we want to put a fence up instead to keep the dog in. We don't want to have to go to the expense of a digger if possible!
Any suggestions welcome. |

RE: Hedge Removal Posted 178 days ago The cheapest way I can offer would be to cut all the shrubs down to ground level, paint stump with glyphosate and then you would need to remove any roots that are in the way of the new fence posts. Any other roots could stay in the ground to rot.
It may not be practical in your case but that's what I would do. Shouldn't cost anything except for glyphosate. Then it's only elbow grease you need. |

RE: Hedge Removal Posted 177 days ago Nope sorry Pomolo, but I have to disagree with you there. Ariete what you want is a hand winch.

Best to hire rather than buy of course, unless you have regular work for one.
Leave as much of each bush attached as possible. It's a fulchrum that helps to lever the plant out of the ground. Cut away to seperate each bush with a chainsaw. run it through between each stump/trunk. Then you can get a rope around and winch. Stand by with a sharp spade, axe or mattock to help sever big and stubborn roots. If it's possibhle you can maybe use a strong ute instead of a winch.
Be very careful and sensible. This can be a dangerous job. A cable under tension can kill if it snaps. Please get the assistance of somebody who has some experience with winches. I don't want to scare you unnecessarily though. It can make a hard job a lot easier.
On the other hand - I question whether it's the right solution. A good hedge is a much more asthetically pleasant boundary than any fence and doesn't deteriorate. Could you not cut it back hard on your side and erect a ringlock of some kind? A weld mesh and chicken wire fence, with the chicken wire folded out at the base will keep the dog in very well, it wont even be able to dig under it. And the hedge will grow through again so you wont see it. This is overkill of course but gives the idea.
