Paving In Concerete ?

Posted 809 days ago

Hi,

We have a small paving project with 2 courtyards (~ 25sqm each). We have brought some 400x400 sandstone pavers for the job.

I once saw my dad lay pavers directly into wet concrete (direct from a ready-mix truck), this seemed like a quick and easy way to do the job and I'm guessing has the following benefits:
- No weeds
- No movement
- Little Preparation

It obviously comes with these downsides...
- Permanent (Cannot move/change later on)

The questions I have is ...
- Cost ? what does a concrete truck cost ? how much is that mesh reinfocing ? ... is this likely to be a lot more expensive than sand+stone+compacting ?
- Process ... is there any good documentation on the process for doing this type of job directly into wet concrete ?

Any thoughts / suggestions appreciated.

Well Exie, you did say 'any thoughts/suggestions' so here's my two bobs worth...
Our fathers did a lot of odd jobs around the house using all sorts of materials because they were raised in an era of making-do, and were happy just to have what they did. Nowadays most of us want things to look professionally done but still need to save a few dollars.
I think that unless you are very experienced at laying concrete as well as paving and getting the levels exactly right you may end up with a bit of a mess. And it will be permanent (and expensive). Whenever I've watched the guys pave, regardless if its bricks or slabs, they go to a lot of effort to screed the area totally flat with a slight fall to allow for ease of water drainage. Then they bang the pavers/bricks into position and after all that they sweep fine sand between the joints and its all compacted flat. I can't see any of that happening on wet concrete.
Just my thoughts anyway. Hope it looks stunning when its all done. Good luck.

If you want a little bit of harder support I watched few times on TV fellows mixing some dry cement into dry sand underneath pavers. I think it was something like 1 cement to 8 sand parts. No water and eventually rain and moisture from underneath makes cement to bind. This is weak strength, fairly easy to remove but gives better support than sand alone. Must admit, all looks easy on TV, but if you don't do it often enough and don't remember all things to do and do properly, paving might be bit of trouble for mere mortal.

i don't get it....why pave in concrete when you can just concrete the area. It would be cheaper you can also put a design in the concrete to make it look like big blocks or pavers have been placed and can also put different colours.

It is not called stenciling but called stamping which is different. They do this when the concrete is wet.

there are pictures below to show you what i am saying
