RE: Chicken house! Posted 840 days ago There are lots of chook house designs on the net. Chook tractors are also popular. D.Burke has had a couple on his shows. Find them in the fast sheets.
If you don't get any satisfaction there, then there are Chook Chat forums that will be pleased to offer suggestions, I'm quite sure. |

RE: Chicken house! Posted 809 days ago You can improvise, keeping in mind several necessities for chicken:
Laying boxes with straw
Dry floor in overnight shelter
Roosting perches.
Roof and floor protecting at least part that is for nesting and overnight resting.
Metal mesh to protect from predators
Possibly automatic feeder that chicken has to step on it to open otherwise there will be plenty of freeloaders like mice, rats, small birds that manage to get through the mesh.
Good luck.

RE: Chicken house! Posted 803 days ago really you just need a wooden frame box to a size you want. Cement some posts in the ground so it does not blow away. You can get chicken mesh or even a thicker mesh for look to hold the hens in. Also they need a perch, sheltering spot from wind/rain and don't forget clean water and food _________ No gardener is really good before he has killed one or two plants.

RE: Chicken house! Posted 782 days ago I think we had the Taj Mahal of chicken houses.LOL
Built out of colourbond on a concrete floor (so we could hose it), but only because we let them out in the day to play in the dirt and dust their feathers. We would make sure we left them a dirt area if we weren't going to let them out.
They had roosts inside a closed area, and a box for laying which had a hinged lid, so that we could just walk past, lift the lid and collect the eggs. We painted the roosts regularly with old car engine oil to kill any lice so that they would not be uncomfortable.
Chicken wire went around the outside area, however we eventually put it overhead as well. Even tho we cut feathers off one wing, they still flew out when a fox came visiting. We made sure that they couldn't see the fox from their box and that worked much better. Nothing like screaming hens in the middle of the night when they saw Mr Fox arrive!! Our beagle did a good job of chasing him off!!
TIP: the better the coop, the less worry you will have.
_________ Of all the wonderful surprises in life, none is better than seeing that first shoot tear out of the earth and form into a wonderful plant and vegetable.. . |
