SUN PROTECTION FOR BROMELIADS AND ORCHIDS

Posted 853 days ago

Hi all

The only place where I can put my collection of bromeliads is in front of my house, which faces south-east. In this area (Gold Coast) the sun is fully on this area from first thing in the .am until about midday. It is as hot as blazes and burns the leaves, apart from drying the growing mix too soon, making some of the broms lose their newly growing centres.

I want to provide some protection for the plants. Possibly a screen of lattice or shade-cloth.

Does anyone have any ideas about how to do this. The sides need to have a lower percentage of shadecloth, with the top being about 50% shade.

We do not have a great deal of money to spare so would appreciate something with not too much cost please.

_________
Thanks to everyone who has responded to my question, trying to help me solve this problem. Regards Irene_R

Yes, you could sew the two densities of shade cloth together. Make a frame to nail or staple the shade cloth. You will find your house a pleasant place to be for yourselves as well as the plants.

Hi hothouse I am on the sunshine coast so what you feel weather wise so do I. Just an idea where money is concerned. I am not mad on broms but I do have orchids and ferns which feel the heat just as much. I had a layer of shadecloth on a frame over mine and wasn,t happy with this so I put up another layer again. I don,t know about down where you are but I went to the recycling shed at the dump and found some shadecloth for very cheap you may be lucky. Also you probably know anyway but to keep the middle of broms full of water ...Hope this helps

As an alternative to shadecloth you could consider sail or pergola.
But as low budget, inexpensive shadecloth is probably the go.
