worm farm and compost heap in one Posted 111 days ago 2 Wide radial tyres with the sidwalls cut out and placed on top of each other in the garden. I fill them with chook manure, grass clippings, shredded paper, kitchen scraps and leaves. Keep them moist all the time, can cover with shade mesh doubled or any feed bag. With the heat on the tyres, in 6 weeks compost is complete and absolutely thick with worms. Take the top tyre off and place in another spot in the garden, push the compost off around the sides of the bottom tyre, loosen that tyre and push the compost through, then place it on the other one ready to start again. Level the compost and plant immediately. No waiting. Everything is ready for planting. The growth on fruit trees I have planted in this mix is outstanding. Vegies just flourish. |

RE: worm farm and compost heap in one Posted 110 days ago Do you buy worms to put in it, or are they attracted to the waste? |

RE: worm farm and compost heap in one Posted 109 days ago The worms just arrive by themselves, attracted to the heap and there are hundreds of them. Some really thick long ones and loads of medium and little ones. I take a handful of worms and some of the compost to start off a new heap. I think that because there are so many worms is why the heap is so successful. The soil here is hard clay, that sets like a rock after rain. There were little sign of worms until I struck on the idea of the tyres. Now the plants flourish and the soil is a good texture, even in our North Queensland heat in the summer. |
