Storing House Paint

Posted 676 days ago

Storing House Paint
What is the best method of storing house paint.
With the lid on tight, lid up or upside down.
Or does it not matter which way it is stored, and for how long is paint stored useable.
Thanks
Ray

Make sure its very well closed, then store it upside down. This prevents a skin from settling on the top. I've kept paint this way for years without a problem. After a few years its best to dispose of it anyway as colours come in and out of fashion and the paint just takes up space.

Don't store the paint with the can upside down as if a skin does form then it will be at the bottom of the can and impossible to remove.
I am a retired painter & decorator and I have paints stored for years, if a skin does form then simply cut around the edge of the skin and lift it off and wrap it in newspaper for disposal.
Note: this is only for oil paint, some water paints will go off on storage and have a foul mildew odour, dispose of these with your local council.
All paints that have been stored need to be well stired with a flat stick to reincorporate all of the pigment and driers, after stirring its not a bad idea to strain the paint through a section of nylon stocking.
Failure to stir properly can result in poor opacity, uneven 'sheery' finish and even non drying.

Regards
Alan
