Converting an existing swimming pool into a rain water tank.

Posted 195 days ago

Hi, I'm hoping someone may be able to help me. I have an existing inground concrete pool that will cost more to renovate than it would to just build a new pool.. So what i am thinking to do is -if I am able - is to convert my existing pool into a rainwater tank and then have a new pool built in another area. Any help would be greatly appreciated and any way i can get all that water for my plants would be fantastic.

Hi, You need to start by getting a plumber to reroute your existing stormwater into the pool and then the overflow back into the stormwater. You will probably need to put a cover over it in the form of decking etc. I have seen this done and they had an outdoor setting and their BBQ on it; obviously it needs to be strong and probably with a screwed down trap door in case you need to get down there one day. You may also start breeding mozzies! Go to you local pump or irrigation supplier for advise on the correct size sump pump; don't go cheap with the pump it's not worth it. You can also pump up to a smaller tank and gravity feed from it to your plants. There are countless methods/arrangments that you can use, just depends on how much you want to spend. Talk to your irrigation shop.

Sounds like a very worthy project. Your first port of call MUST be the local council to find out if in principle it's O.K. Speak ONLY to the council engineer. Apart from that, what Alan said. DON'T SKIMP ON COSTS with it if you decide to go ahead. Keep us posted.
