Hi,Strange you should ask this question, we are in the process of building one now. Very basic really, ours will be a square shape with the corners cut across, if that makes sense? So basically measure how high and long and wide you want it and buy timber or steel posts to suit. Dig holes for posts and cement them in, put boards or steel joining posts at the top,( post to post), then across the middle and cover with shade cloth and secure shade cloth on top with clips or something similar, if you ask at a good hardware place they will be able to advise you. hope this helps .

Hi, I have almost finished (roofing to go on) a 6M wide x 5M deep pergola with a gable roof. I took my sketch to Carrolls Pine and they sized the timber for me. You need to make sure that the timbers are strong enough to span between your supporting posts. Some hardware stores also carry basic plans for pergolas etc.
