worm farm and compost heap in one

Posted 714 days ago

2 Wide radial tyres with the sidwalls cut out and placed on top of each other in the garden. I fill them with chook manure, grass clippings, shredded paper, kitchen scraps and leaves. Keep them moist all the time, can cover with shade mesh doubled or any feed bag. With the heat on the tyres, in 6 weeks compost is complete and absolutely thick with worms. Take the top tyre off and place in another spot in the garden, push the compost off around the sides of the bottom tyre, loosen that tyre and push the compost through, then place it on the other one ready to start again. Level the compost and plant immediately. No waiting. Everything is ready for planting. The growth on fruit trees I have planted in this mix is outstanding. Vegies just flourish.

Do you buy worms to put in it, or are they attracted to the waste?

The worms just arrive by themselves, attracted to the heap and there are hundreds of them. Some really thick long ones and loads of medium and little ones. I take a handful of worms and some of the compost to start off a new heap. I think that because there are so many worms is why the heap is so successful. The soil here is hard clay, that sets like a rock after rain. There were little sign of worms until I struck on the idea of the tyres. Now the plants flourish and the soil is a good texture, even in our North Queensland heat in the summer.

Fantastic idea, I heard there is cadmium in tyres. Do you think this will leach out into the soil?

Great idea mate,
I too am located in North Queensland and we have hard clay as we are in the bush.We have a rain water tank cut in two filled it in with camel and cattle manure and planted silverbeat in there this loosed it up.We then went to bunnings and bought 1000 worms for 25 bucks BARGAIN.
No we thousands of them, feed them food scraps reguarly. They are really healthy and we feed them to our tank of freshwater brims.Great stuff in north qld.
Good luck

I haven't got a lot of space but am thinking about it. Saw Julie Roberts and an eco lady on Oprah last week as I was ironing. Trying to buy the book - Think it was titled "Gloriously Green"? We all need to be into the environment. I have bought my young grandchildren a mini Worm Farm so they can start appreciating the wonder of it all. We are setting up our "mini" tomorrow - got to start this generation "YOUNG" eh. Off to Bunnings (or "Bunnies" according to Montana) in the morning to buy some worms. Yeh.

How did it go?

To tell the truth, I have to have a look at Bunnings, as I did not see mini worm farm yet. I've got the Can-O-Worms farm (round one). Bit old something like 8 or 10 years now. Legs bent now and I am thinking about reinforcement for plastic legs or replacement. Probably I will go reinforcement way, as legs are perfectly all right except for getting out of shape.

Thank you so much for this! I have been wanting a worm bin and couldn't understand why they were all so expensive. This is the perfect solution! I can't wait to get started.
