RE: Boulder retaining wall Posted 337 days ago Is it legal to build on a waterfront canal or do you need council permit? |

RE: Boulder retaining wall Posted 337 days ago I've been told that i can as long as i don't go over a metre high. And thanks for replying Pomolo. My idea is to run a row of boulders along the boundary then build a garden behind that and then go up another half a metre so it will be level with the pool. Add some glass fence and bob's your uncle... easy ! do you have 2 shovel's Pomolo? :) |

RE: Boulder retaining wall Posted 336 days ago rock walls can be tricky make sure you have plenty of supplies. ie cement, sand, and in your case ROCKS and lots of rubble for behind the wall. if the rock wall is 1m high then the base has to be at least half the hieght. 1m high by 500mm wide at the base.if the wall is going to be hit by waves make sure you have wieght(rubble)behind the wall and dont go light with the mortar.A cement mixer will come in handy.check cement bag details for cement usage around salt water their on the back or contact the company.ask your local landscapers for free clean fill(rubble) |

Has anyone go some suggestions of the best way to tackle this, or even better has anyone out there acutally built somthing simmilar? |

RE: Boulder retaining wall Posted 138 days ago I think your greatest problems are going to be drainage and retaining the soil. You are next to canal so I presume that the water drains to it,you will need proper drainage at the base of the wall, AG pipe and gravel should do the rick plus the odd weep hole. A concrete footing will help with the strength of the wall, Placing large rocks on the base and gradually getting smaller also helps with the stability. I have built for a very small wall half a metre high using this method as her property backed onto swampy land so had drainage problems. The wall acted as a drain and cured this problem. I found that wedging small rocks into the nooks and crannies that it held everything into place. |
