retaining walls

Posted 142 days ago

What is the cheapest, effective, material other than treated pine, to build a retaining wall approx 1.1 metres high and 3m wide?
Thanks.

Those bricks that interlock, here in QLD Hanson, we used the ones called Windsor, a landscaping supplier will be able to advise you.

The bottom course is set in cement, then the others just stack up on top, they lock in with out any further cementing.

Pity we can't put pics on here, I could show you.

They back fill with gravel and ag pipe for drainage.

hi, can you let me know how the drainage is done? we've built a retaining wall out of besser blocks and i've no idea how to do the drainage. at some stage i'm going to get a little bob cat in to change the slope of the garden a little and to turn one end of the retaining wall into a garden bed so i'll need to build other retaining type walls too - hopefully cheaper though - i had paid people come in and do the foundations and the besser block laying and it was more expensive than i hoped.

Hi greenforestfairy, (love the name) I can't speak with total authority on this, might be good to speak to a local landscaper or hardware supplier, if they will share their knowledge, our wall is 8 metres long, and I think the guys laid that ag pipe the full length about two courses up, and poked the end of it out at one end.

As you may know, ag pipe is poly tube full of holes, and when buried in the gravel back fill behind the wall it allows the water to drain away from behind the wall.

Just my opinion, but with gravel back fill, and those interlocking bricks are not totally sealed, the water will drain through anyway.

We visited your lovely town last year, you seem to have most of industry available, so I'd suggest get some advice from a Tradie, and go from there.
