Painting over varnished wood

Posted 1051 days ago

Hi - my internal doors, skirting boards etc are all dark varnished wood. What is the best way to paint over them - I want to paint them off white to brighten things up - thank you !

Gosh you're really taking on a big job! I suggest that you be guided by your local paint shop but I cannot see anything wrong with putting a sander over it all & then you have a painting surface. So long as you take the shiny surface off, the paint should adhere. Can you try this on a small area to see if it works? A small electric hand sander would be ideal for this.

I remember years ago someone telling me that if you want to put light paint over varnish to first sand it to take the shine off & then to paint it with silver paint because silver immediately covers & then you can put your colour choice over the top. Be careful to use the correct paint though as I don't think water based will go over turps based finishes.

We had the same problem and were able to buy a product called Griplock especially for this. You paint it on, let it dry well then proceed to one or two coats of undercoat and then top coat. We used water based acrylic and they were done about eighteen months ago. No problem; we bought the our Griplock at Bunnings but most good hardwares should sell it. Fantastic stuff. Our house was just so light and bright after painting.
