Ignore bottom one I left. Introducing one male kitten with one male cat.

Hi this nj79au,

I was wondering how you introduce a 12 week old kitten with a new environment living with a 3 year old male cat. I please need some advice and help. I am hoping the transition will be good. Thanks for the advice if you leave it.

You have probably already completed aclimatising your cats to each other by now, but i will post this reply in case anyone else comes here researching the same problem.

You will need to keep the new kitten confined to one room of the house for a couple of days to let him get used to his new surroundings. During this time let him smell the bedding of your older cat, you can even swap thier bedding over for the first few nights to let them get used to each others smell before they even see each other. Alternatively you can rub your cat with a towel and then let the other cat sniff it. Rub the towel over both cats several times to transfer the scent. Once the new arrival is settled and both cats have been exposed to the others scent a few times let them look at each other but keep them seperated. A screen door is handy for this, of just open the door a crack to let them see and smell each other. There will probably be some hissing and growling involved, this is quite normal. Just seperate them and try again later. If they are not trying to scratch the door down to get at each other you can try removing the door but do not let them fight. If they fight you will need to seperate them again. Do not leave them unsupervised at this stage. The whole process will take time and patience. Some hissing and growling is normal, fighting is not. You should know within a couple of weeks if the cats are able to get along or not. Some cats just will not tolerate each other even if you do everything right. Introducing same sex is more difficult but the age difference should help. There is plenty of information about this on the web so i would recommend google if you need further help. Good luck with your new kitten i hope it all goes well!
