Budgie with sore head

Posted 556 days ago

Hello All,
We rescued a budgie which had been attacked by a cat, and although we have had it 6 months its very timid and won't fly out of the cage or let us get near it or touch it (we have put it in a very large cage).
The budgie seems to have lice or mites or something on its head, as it keeps rubbing its head on the cage and its head looks sore. We have sprayed it with budgie mite spray with no success and since it wont let us catch it we arent sure what else to do. Unfortunately we can't afford to take it to the vet at present. Does anyone have any suggestions please? Thank you

If it was a wild budgie to start with, the best thing for it is to release it where you first rescued it. Wild budgies can't be tamed, and will fret. The head-rubbing is one symptom of that. Nice work saving it from the cat !!

I don't know what area you are in but it's highly unlikely that it's a wild budgie; wild budgies are smaller than the budgies in the pet shops and come in one colour only - green. If it isn't a wild budgie then DO NOT let it go because it WILL be killed by wild birds or a cat if not caught buy someone else. It may be moulting at the moment so that could be the reason that it is rubbing it's head. If you cannot take it to an avian vet, check the classifieds in your local paper for a breeder that is close by and ask them if they would take a look at it for you. Good Luck.
