Neighbour's cat is a pooper!

Posted 1292 days ago

We live in a cul-de-sac where just about everyone but us owns a cat. Our yard has become the public toilet, and we're out of ideas. We've tried napthalene flakes, chilli flakes, citronella, and ready-made animal deterrents to stop the pooping. Nothing has worked! We like cats but they poo right unde our windows and are sick of the smell. Is there a plant we could put around as a deterrent?

Euphorbia milii (Crown of Thorns) as a physical barrier
Lavendula (Lavenda)
Coleonema pulchrum (Diosma)
May be worth a try.

Hi Skimp78
How annoying, if only people would keep cats indoors or on a harness. I've had a similar problem of being Cat Central, my own enviro cat was too frightened to wander in our own yard.
I managed to cut down the amount of trespassing and marking/pooing but not totally deter 2 of the cats.

I've found that the method below works but you need to keep it up.The aim is to remove the scent left behind which marks the spot as a toilet for the next cat. Faeces and urine have cells of fats which tend to hang around scentwise. You are also claiming back your own yard with your own scent, in a way, just by dealing with it.

1. Remove poo ($1 beach spade works well) or wee
2. Sluice area with half bucket of water with detergent
3. Spray area well with water and vinegar mix. Ratio H2O : Vinegar = 4 : 1.
You have now cleansed the area
4. Finally, spray area with good slug of tea tree oil or euc oil mixed with water and dash of alcohol in spray bottle. Shake well each time.
Cats and dogs hate this smell. You need to respray the area maybe fortnightly or weekly.
If they have been spraying the door mat - get rid of itand wait awhile before getting a new one. Cleanse the area as above. Remember to cleanse up to 30-40 cm on walls - male cats spray up. Also works with lawns and dogs.

I actually removed an old diosma which was hopelessly wee drenched from dogs and replaced it with rosemary. Prickly plants also deter animals. Note their routes of entry and exits and mess up their habits. Use gravel or mesh on ground as unattractive mulch around precious plants.
Good Luck!

I live in a group of townhouses (about 20) and have limited garden - i have two dogs and everyone else seems to have cats! Aside from the issues i have to the wildlife and nature in the area, they were pooping/scenting the mulched area in my front yard (my whole front yard is mulched- turned into a giant kitty-litter box)not very nice to walk into your front door! It got so bad I couldnt open the windows in my place!
I tried everything too, even installed a sprinkler system i could turn on when i actually caught the buggers doing 'the do'
A friend of mine (who owns cats responsibly) told me that they dont like to sratch in their kitty litter when their claws get caught. So I laid chicken wire under my mulch (only a thin layer on top) and put plastic bird spikes from bunnings under the chicken wire randomly. (these arent cruel, they are quite large but transparent so not too obvious) Two weeks and doing well - i bought a black cat cut out that sits in my garden... ineffectual, but a girlfriend said she had one but an Owl, which works for her

I have a neighbours cat that has used my yard as its toilet.
I've used curry powder and nephlane flakes but didn't find it worked. I inquired at my local council about cats roaming onto peoples properties and they said all cats should be microchipped and registered just like dogs, my dogs not allowed to roam off a leash or do its buisness anywhere in public or in my neighbours gardens so why should cats. If anyone has constant problems with cats pooing and weeing in their yards if you get no where discussing the matter with the ownwer of the cats get your ranger onto it, these cats also are out killing birds and wildlife and the owners probably don't even know what thier dear cat is up to. I don't find cat owners around me t be responsible pet owners at all. Sorry don't mean to offend the responsible cat owners out there.

It has been now law for 10 years, that cats have to be kept on YOUR OWN PROPERTY. When are cat owners going to be made to adhere to this law? I have 2 cats and a big cat aviary, with bushes for shelter, natural scratching poles and own entry to house. My cats are very happy, they can go out day and night and won't annoy the neighbors. However I do have a few neighbors that let their cats roam. They keep me awake at night, they piss on my door, they still try to fight with my cats, they try to get at my pet birds on the veranda and of course they kill all the native little birds and ring tails. I tried to talk to my neighbors, but they just ignore me. Now I got a cat trap. I spike it twice per day and at night. When I catch them I hand them over to by-laws. Lets see how many fines those neighbors can afford. Wouldn't it be smarter to have a great outdoor area fenced in for your cats? Cats are not native to Australia. If we don't put a barrier between pets and native animals, we are going to lose them all. And apart from having to clean up the poohs of their cats, a pregnant lady could get an illness from that cat pooh by simply gardening.
HOW IRRESPONSIBE ARE YOU? LIKE I SAID, IT HAS BEEN LAW FOR 10 YEARS!!! Councils don't really take it seriously so it is left to you and me to clean up the neighbor hood of roaming cats. By there way I also know of people that simply shoot any cat coming onto their property. Be warned!

April21 I do agree with your every word.

When are a lot of cat owners who let their cats roam going to act like responsible cat owners, unfortunately a lot of them probably never will they just dont get it dont realise what their darling cat is up to killing birds and wildlife, the cat enclosures you can get now are great and or use a bird avairy, bird avairys dont have to be just for birds.
I will admit i am not a cat lover, but I love every other animal on this earth. I would take a cat to the pound than to return it to the owner if I caught it on my proprty, let them pay to get their cat out of jail, for roaming around, YEP THEY MAY GET SICK OF PAYING A LOT OF MONEY TO GET THE CAT OUT OF THE POUND.
My 2 dogs arent out killing and pooing so i won't
put up with cats doing it sorry.

I have a cat problem too. We seem to be the only cat-free household in a neighbourhood full of cats.
But it seems that the cats eitherside are the most problematic. Generally its the caterwauling and fighting at night and the regular scent/urine spray that my house endures that is most problematic.
For the night activities we just run outside shouting and throwings things (shoes usually).
For the urine spray I'm forever pine-o-cleaning and spreading napthalene everwhere. After a year of this its wearing me down. (chili, lemon peel etc hasn't made any difference).

I've rung the council and the only advice has been to trap them and either return to the owner (presumably for an arguement and potential re-trap later on) or if deemed feral take it to the council for destroying.
That's it. The ranger guy didn't mention anything about a cat pound.

I'm over it, and it sounds like lots of people bugged by roaming, spraying and wildlife eating cats are over it too ...

I would suggest go to your local council and get them
to make a new Bye Law about stray cats! Ours has and
they now have cat traps to get rid of the animals!
Brilliant Idea.
I am a cat lover, had cats all my life till I was 54
when I got my first dog!
But the majority of cat owners are totally and utterly
iresponsible. I used to keep my cat in at night and he
used to remain in the garden or with me most of the day.
If we went out he was kept inside.

My problem has been going on for about 5 years and I have a very good neighbor! When I told him about the cat poop he came up with a bottle of cat deterrent from Bunnings(costs about $18 per 500gm container). This stuff worked but you have to spread it everywhere there is any loose soil which the cat can dig up. However that bottle was used up years ago so now we have put sharp stones in all our flower gardens. I have built a wire fence around the vege garden which was also a popular spot.
The cat doesn't stop- it scrapes up sand from the surface of an area behind the house, does its poop and then covers it with the sand. Pretty Smart.
Don Burke suggests that we innocent householders can spread manure around to deter cats. What a repulsive suggestion, although not as bad as cat poop it is still poop. Sheep manure smells for weeks.
The resposibility for this must remain with cat owners. It is about time that local authorities started to fine cat owners who allow their cats to stray at night. Where is the legislation relating to this problem?

Hi

I had that problem about 2 years ago, my next door neighbours cat and my cat was doing their business in my garden, but I fixed the problem. I bouight some of that plastic fence extension and cut it to size and placed on top of the garden bed, then covered it with soil, no more problems, cats cannot dig holes so they move on and my garden is much happier. If there is a link somewhere will post a photo
