abnormally small egg

Posted 307 days ago

I am a very recent keeper of chooks and have so much to learn. I did get a shock today when I collected the eggs from my four chooks. One was hardly the size of a pigeon's egg (approx. 2.5cm across). Anybody got any ideas on what would cause this. I do have one chook that has developed a bare rear end, an area of approx. 7cm or 8cm in diameter. I only noticed this yesterday. Could there be a connection? I also have a chook that has always laid a lovely cream coloured egg,she is a Wellsommer. Lately some of her eggs have patchy dark areas on the shell or very tiny dark speckles.

My chooks have a constant supply of pellets and I usually feed them some chookmix in the late afternoon along with any fruit and veggie scraps from the house. I also give them a wet bran mash in the morning. My husband also throws some grass clippings into the pen when he mows the lawn. I do not allow them to roam in the garden as I have just mulched to try to keep the plants moist.

Any suggestions or ideas would be most welcome.

the exact same thing happened to me a few months ago, it was exactly the size of a pigeon egg...
2 of my chickens were already laying normal sized eggs when i first bought them, but the third youngest one wasn't laying yet... and then, since i've found that little egg, there's up to 3 eggs a day, rather than 2... i was thinking maybe it was a first-egg thing!

Strange. I thought my chook was just not feeling the best or something. We've had our chook for a couple of years. Normally she produces perfect sized eggs. a few weeks ago she produced first a larger than normal egg and then 2 virtually half sized (or smaller than) eggs. It's obviously not just a first-egg thing with my old chook. The tiny eggs sure have us dumbfounded.

I cracked open the tiny eggs today to add them to cooking and found they had no yolk.
