rex rabbits behaviour

Posted 904 days ago

i have recently got a rex rabbit for my 10 year old daughter. The rabbit is very good with us and has a lovely temprement, she comes in the house when we are home in the day time, when we are out she is in her run then at night she is put into her hut, yet on an evening when she is in the house she seems to be very hyper by jumping about and running around crazy!! she doesn't do this all the time but her behaviour is different from in the day in the house, the kids think its very entertaining. is this normal behaviour? is she just burning off energy? also is it best to get her desexed? she about five months old now.

Yes, it sounds normal. Rabbits sleep more during the day than in the evening. Running around with the occasional flip and head wobble thrown in is usual playful behaviour in a young rabbit (it usually means they're happy). Try giving her a ball which makes rattle noises (like for cats), some rabbits enjoy pushing them around. You can get her desexed at about 6 months of age. Vets recommend it to prevent uterine cancer in female rabbits but it's up to you to weigh up the pros and cons. I'm not sure what the recovery period is and there's always risks with surgery (make sure you find an experienced rabbit vet to do the surgery if you decide to get her desexed).
