plant eating chickens Posted 934 days ago To the organisers of Backyard Blitz,
Background:
My name is Myrna Airey and I am a preschool teacher in Bondi, Sydney. For many years I have wanted to introduce the children at our school to wonders of nature by bringing chickens into our Preschool for them to look after. Unfortunately, this unique and educational idea has always faced with opposition from the other staff members for many years. However, after much campaigning, I have finally convinced them of how wonderful it will be for the children to have chickens roaming the school and how the children can benefit and learn from this arrangement.
We have recently purchased two beautiful hens and a coop. We let the hens run freely around the school as the children absolutely love them and enjoy interacting with these magnificent (and entertaining) little creatures. The children love counting how many eggs have been laid each day and then we proceed to make creative foods with the eggs. The children are amazed at how versatile an egg is and we have made many different dishes e.g. meringues, omelets, custard etc
The Problem......:
Our two blessed hens have:
· destroyed every single plant that we have in our school garden;
· eaten away at all the vegetation; and
· created huge holes in the garden from continually scratching at the soil.
The Challenge:
The school children really love interacting with the chickens (they’ve named them Super Noodle and Lucy) and it would be really sad to keep them permanently in their coop.
Could you please assist our school with determining various plant types (and where to plant them) so that our school can still look beautiful and the chickens can still run free.

RE: plant eating chickens Posted 909 days ago My chooks also free range,we dont even have a weed growing anymore!.I have found they dont touch.Gravillias,bottle brush,May Bush,Citrus Trees,or Agapanthis(If you can stop them digging up the bulbs in the first place)
They love dirt baths,so mabey their own little pile of dirt to play in.Do the children bring their scraps from home for them?
They need protein,I give mine a bit of minced beef,butthey will even eat raw bacon and devon.The only other solution is to do what we have done and fence of the plants with wire.
Hope this helps.
