RE: can the fangs of bird eating spiders be removed Posted 1098 days ago Thanks hippychick, for your wonderful advice... But my husband bought it for our ten year son, as a christmas present and now I'm paranoid. He sits behind me in his aquarium as I work, but I can't stop thinking about it.
When I arrive home from any destination the first thing I use to do is check our answering machine for messages, now I check that hairy ugly fury... monster. grrrrrrrrr... Help, do you have any other ideas.
regards

RE: can the fangs of bird eating spiders be removed Posted 1098 days ago I'm sorry Mary! it's just your question kind of blew me away.
I've seen those spiders and they're pretty scary, I can understand your plight now.
You might just have to put you foot down (not on the spider) but on your husband, explain you're not comfortable with it in the house and move it to the shed! (the boys sanctum)
Best of luck, Hippychick

RE: can the fangs of bird eating spiders be removed Posted 1096 days ago Hi Hippychick,
Yes. I should have elaborated a little.
Easy to say, just throw him in the shed, but hard to convince... A fiend suggested to put a mirror on my desk as I work, so I can keep an eye on it. I mean I know there's know way he can get out, because my husband has secured the sides with tape to make me feel better. (He has a grill for a lid, on his aquarium - for breathing) So he's safe, it's just the thought that he's there (shiver) that freaks me out.
On a happier note, I do find the way he captures his prey and raps it up ever so elegentaly, very intriguing.
It would break my sons heart to through it in the shed. So if you have any other suggestions, feel free to express.
Regards
Mary

RE: can the fangs of bird eating spiders be removed Posted 1095 days ago Can't the aquarium be moved to another place so it's not near you while you work. Out of sight, out of mind so to speak.
The other thing that springs to mine is the grill. Just a few pin holes in a lid would be enough for fresh air for a spider. |

RE: can the fangs of bird eating spiders be removed Posted 1095 days ago Hi Pomolo,
Thanks for your tip. We live in a unit, and it's no mansion, (unfortunately) So space is an issue. At the moment it is sitting on my sewing machine cabinet, beside the bread oven, behind my working desk in, what is known as open plan living/dinning/lounge/kitchen. (Boy that was a mouthfull) I did suggest putting in the garage, but my son is not happy... I also suggested his bedroom, but believe it or not the spider lets out an unusal smell and his room became unbearable.
The shop assistant said that it is a perfectly good aquarium and the spider cannot get out. No matter how hard he tries. Honestly my main worry is that my son may just become to friendly with it and let it walk about. We have already sat down and discussed the dangers and mentioned that even though it is his spider, it is still not his best friend and cannot be trusted. The shop assistant also mentioned that no-one in Australia has ever died from their bite, just become ill with flu like symtoms and may need hospital care.
So once again I bang my head against a brick wall, I don't want to sound like a wimp, but I am... I am really - really scared of it.
