Itchy Galah

Posted 242 days ago

I have a pet galah about ten years old in a large cage that comes indoors at night. He has a sore under his wing that he keeps scratching, hence all his feathers are gone from that area. It is driving him crazy. Taken him to the vet two times and they gave me anti biotics and a collar to wear but it never seems to clear up, as soon as the collar comes off hes' back to it. The vet says apart from this he is extremely healthy, no mites or any nasties, just this. Any suggestions? Thanks

I know this is going to sound strange but if there is an emotional upset in the house it can effect the emotional state of the bird. I once met a cockatoo that would pull it's feathers out when a certain person came lived in the house, The bird was taken to vets and give medication but to no avail. When that person moved out of the house the bird got better. Your Galah could be bored did someone used to handle it and play with it? Does it have toys or a tree branch to chew on? Is he a social bird? Does he do this behaviour when you are at home or when you go out?
Sorry given more questions than answers!
Cheers Bud.

Bud, No it doesn't sound weird at all, I have thought about all those things. He is the most spoilt bird ever and there is nothing different in the house. according to the vet it is some sort of fatty thing that he thought might have been caused by his diet. Tried all the things he suggested but nothing has worked. He is not pulling his feathers out to no avail, there is definitely a sore there that won't heal. He has branches, toys, you name it he's got it. Comes out and wanders the house each day between 4 and 6 but even does it then. I am thinking I might get a second opinion from another avian vet, see what they think. If that doesn't work, I'll be the person shifting out!!!!!!!lol Thanks for your help
