Froglets in our fishpond - they are so cute

Posted 308 days ago

We call it a fishpond but it's not finished yet and there's no fish in it. This summer has been a great wet one and it's obviously been a good time for the frogs to reproduce - yesterday we had another drop of rain and my son spotted lots of froglets swimming around and climbing the edges of our muddy, unlined but still water retaining fishpond.

So long as they aren't cane toads. I understand they are moving further and further south and west.

You must be doing something right if the local frogs have taken up residence. Good work.

There's no cane toad down as south west as we are just yet - thankfully. These little beauties are the eastern froglet. We only have the dam and the fishpond as any source of water (besides the water tanks) around here - so the tadpoles and froglets came as a surprise.

We have had the dogs barking at one of the brown burrowing frogs that had taken up residence under the concrete of our back verandah. That frog is a great indicator that we're going to get some good rain.

I think I've identified the froglets as the eastern Banjo frog. Apparently they can be mistaken for the cane toad - and when you see the adult frog I can understand why. I disturbed one of the young frogs when digging in my rose garden a few weeks back, and just last night I spotted a half grown frog near the back verandah, the dogs had been barking at it. I still don't know what they like about our place, it's good to see them though.
