Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 845 days ago I live in Brisbane and am having trouble with cockatoos attracted by well meaning neighbours who provide seed. On their way to the seed stations the cockatoos have discovered my large vegie growing area and are decimating my crops of sweet corn, snow peas, tomatoes and capsicums. I have placed plastic snakes and cd's around to deter them but to no avail.I would prefer not to have to go to the extreme of netting so any other suggestions on how I might peacefully discourage the cockatoos from helping themselves to my produce would be appreciated |

RE: Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 842 days ago If you can't speak to your neighbour about the problem then I'm afraid covering your garden is the only way. If you do use netting be aware that birds can get caught in it and it can be a messy job freeing them. How about using chicken wire or similar. |

RE: Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 838 days ago Now they know you're there, you're probably stuck with them. Those things can eat a house, so netting might not be effective. A heavy guage wire seems the only answer. A pet shop could advise on how heavy. Good luck. |

RE: Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 822 days ago What about if you also provide a bit of seeds so they will be attracted to this type of food instead of eating what your vegie patch offers. Othewise I believe you are very lucky to have them at home as they are gorgeous even sometimes cheeky birds, Good Luck |

RE: Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 815 days ago They don't like loud noises.I use a loud cap gun every time they land in my trees and they soon go elsewhere. |

RE: Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 806 days ago A number of farmers have tried, with differing successes to provide a "crop" that they can eat and leave the others alone. |

RE: Sulphur crested cockatoos Posted 805 days ago Hi, I feel for you. I have eaten my first cherries off my ten year old trees....not because they have never fruited but because the birds steal them before they change colour. I am now enjoying more cherries than I can possibly eat because we have recently got a dog who is happy to sit and watch birds outside our boundy but can not abide it when they trespass and is constantly on the go chasing the birds from my trees....she thinks it is a wonderful game especially as the parrots and cockatoos love to tease her but while they are all playing their games; I am eating cherries. |
