Hi Wings,

We are in the process of designing our vegie garden including chicken yard. While at this time I do not know if it will be cheaper to buy our eggs from the shop, I am looking foward to having fresh eggs everyday (well most days anyway). Plus there is also the added bonus of the removal of pests by the chickens, getting manure for compost, turning of soil when they scratch plus the enjoyment that keeping chickens gives. I can't wait until we get "our girls".
I know that this doesn't answer your question but I think that more than the cost of the eggs should be considered when keeping chickens.

Take care,

Caro

Chicken give eggs, but also consume table/kitchen leftovers, turn over soil, get rid of many bugs and produce manure as well (some packets are quite smelly).

Extra food is needed, but on top of that they need some commitment:
They need fresh water, sometimes treatment for various ailments.
If cats, foxes or dogs are a problem they have to be locked up every night and let out during the day.

It is hard to leave them without care sometimes even for one day especially when day is extremely hot.

They cannot be house trained and make deposits wherever they are, so have to be kept separate from areas that we don't want their droppings there.

And best to have 3 at least, otherwise they will be stressed out.
Some breeds are more docile and friendly and to control them better it is good idea to spend as much time with them as possible. They will get used to humans and will be easier to manage.
