Dog's dry itchy skin

Posted 1088 days ago

Everything at the vet costs you an arm & a leg so thought I would pass this on.
Our Aust. Terrier used to suffer with dry itchy skin in summer, the more he itched the more he scratched until his back was bare & raw so I got an old paintbrush & a jar of honey & painted his back liberally with it. He licked the first lot off but thereafter left it alone & within 3 days he had stopped scratching & the hair was starting to grow back. I did the same the next summer & that was 6 years ago & he has not had it since. I guess the honey seals it straight away, stops the air from getting to it.

Our Kelpie was suffering from itching with bald spots and we tried everything , but nothing helped him , then we got onto Vetex Skin Lotion - got it at Coles supermarket, and since then his skin has cleared up like magic. It has taken a few weeks, but no more rubbing and scratching. Its in a spray bottle.

Honey is antibacterial, so the rash could be an infection on the skin.
Dogs can have really sensitive skin, and we should never use human products on them. Try using medicated dog shampoo's & washing off any irritants - sand, salt water, anything.
Teatree oil is a good deterrent for fleas, ticks and mites. Make a solution with capfull of soluable teatree oil to a spraybottle of water spray after washing and spray bedding. Can be used to treat ringworm as a slightly stronger solution rubbed onto the area. Keep Teatree oil away from the face.

my maltese molly had the same condition and i tried everything including things from the vet,i used some dove soap to wash both of my dogs when i ran out of their shampoo and incidentally igenerally use johnstones baby shampoo as it is very mild. after using the dove soap i saw that molly had stopped scratching so i use it all the time now....suanne

I had a Silky terrior with the same problem.tried anything and every thing. Finally cured it by rubbing Peanut Oil(as in cooking oil)into the affected areas with cotton balls.
it softened the skin, and his hair started growing back within 2 weeks

My Foxy suffered with itchy skin and after trying everything
I could lay my hands on I mixed "Elocon" cream {prescribed for humans} with vaseline and was surprised to find that it worked, who know's, it may have been just the vaseline, but we were so relieved to find a cure, try it.

Hello ALL, one of my lovely German Shepherds also suffered from this condition. Since I always want the best for my animals I used to spend a fortune on different vets but then went to the Health shop for humans and was told to give him 2 tablets of zinc, 2 tablets of dolomite and 2 tablets of yeast (use less for smaller dogs !) and YES the problem has gone and never came back. Please, do not use cortozene as it has a very bad side effect - it damages the liver, the kidneys and the heart, Good luck to you all
