Roses vs Kangaroos

Posted 1599 days ago

Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone has any idea how to stop kangaroos eating roses? I love wildlife and it's a real buzz having 10 kangaroos in your front yard on an early morning but my roses are struggling enough with the drought and then to get kangaroos eating the new buds and fresh growth is quite disheartening. They eat other bushes - new growth off trees, etc - but the roses are the ones "battling".

I have tried sprinkling my roses with pepper and thought about chilli powder, but i don't really want to hurt the kangaroos. They seem to not like Confidor, as they leave them alone after i spray for aphids, but that only lasts a week or so.

Any help would be appreciated - thank you, Brodash

I don't supose a fence would be appropriate for you? We had a small acreage in the bush and loads of Wallabies but we put in a huge vege garden and just used tall metal fence stakes and high chicken mesh and were fine. Perhaps you could fence off your Roses or at least put an individual 'cage' around them if they are too spread out. Other than that, they don't like dogs much. Hope this helps.

I've had to fence my vegetable garden off from wild life because I was losing everything.

I thought I'd try another tactic to save my flowers so let a large area of grass just grow and the kangaroos seem happy enough to feed on that. I love watching them too and have my chickens running free range amongst the flowers as well.

There's something very beautiful about watching our national icons hopping around.

A dog will keep the roo's away for a few meters, enough to save the roses. But agreeably a high fence is the best option. Kangaroo's are everywhere in our paddock not even the barbed wire helps. Our young orchiard gets a good grazing!

I'm very grateful for my dogs presently, they do a great job keeping the wildlife at bay. Yes - I would like to see the kangaroos come closer at some stage, but while the garden is young and there are lots of tree seedlings struggling to grow I'm happy for them to stay at bay. I don't have a fence up around my rose garden yet or the tree garden. I keep losing the tree seedlings on the far unfenced side of my vege area (the veg area is fenced off), most likely to roos. I'll be fencing the area off before I plant out the next lot of seedlings (I have plenty of old fencing wire I can set up as temporary fencing). Like my chooks, the roos will have to be happy outside of my garden plots.

BTW - I do have individual wire fencing about my roses for the moment. It looks ugly but it stops my dogs from digging into the base of the round beds I've created.

Even the hard, dull, dry ground harbours life - which is brought to the surface with the fresh touch of drenching rain (or the humble watering can).

Thank you all so much for your suggestions. Where I live is subject to a Land Management Agreement, so unfortunately as my roses are planted in the front yard, fencing is not an option.

I do have two dogs, but when I'm not home they are kept in a fenced compound as we don't have fencing around our property at all. This protects the wildlife from harm and I think they know it!! I have actually seen kangaroos "sneaking" up to the compound fence to have a chew on some juicy grass or weed.

I have been advised that Blood 'n' Bone is a deterrent as well, so I might give this a shot too.

Thanks again - if all else fails, perhaps I should just sit back and enjoy the wildlife. Such simple pleasures should be savoured!

Hi, when i was growing up on a farm as a young girl, my mother wold put ammonia in old margarine containers with small holes placed in the lid of the container, and then place them all around her garden and we really never had problems with roo's or possoms.

Hi there if you buy lapsong tea and make a large brew then spray around your garden the Roo's will not come near it as the tea gives off a strong smokey smell like a bush fire smell and the Kangaroo does not like the smell
