COCKATEIL BONDING

Posted 714 days ago

My theory is that male birds bond better with ladies and female cockateils bond better with male humans.
-
As I type this, my young female cockateil is happily sitting on my shoulder. As I socialise and teach her to bond with me.
Only had her for two weeks, but she is bonding with me. Picks at shoulder hairs and softly nibbles my ear.
Was 'Hand Reared' . But unlike the male Cockateil I've just given away with a his cage, she is not so easily seduced and trained by food responces as he was, as a positive reaction for 'good behaviour'.
-
MALE - FEMALE BONDING
- While it was just him and me, he bonded easily with me. Spent most of his time outside cage and was fascinated when I ate breakfast
and came and we shared toast etc from my plate. Even took wet, chewed food from my mouth, as a young bird does from its mother.
-
I have also, two budgies. One male and one female. Their cage always open. He bonded with her and if she flew
around the room, he'd fly and follow her.And try to make me go away from them.
-
Bought my young, female Cockateil and put her in her own, separate cage. He would then bite my hand, drawing blood, instead of sitting and sharing stuff each day.
-
THEY BOND WITH THE OPPOSITE HUMAN SEX
I quickly noticed that every time my female, care worker came, he'd get closer to and react well with her.
I want a quiet life. So have given him away to a retired Little Old Lady and they are getting on fine.
-----------------------------
I chat to the female cockateil on my shoulder as I wash the dishes, cut vegetables for dinner etc.
- Summer time here. So I don't wear much when in bed as I watch late night TV.
- GROOMING - She's fascinated by my chest hair and starts to pick at it. PAINFUL. So now in the evenings, I wear a T-shirt to bed if she's around.

Hi Stewart96,

I like the theory, its something that I have thought of as well, however, as always, there are exceptions to the rules. My female Galah loves me, and not my husband. She will tolerate him if I am not around, but she is definitely my bird. Our Corella however loves us both equally. As long as he is getting scratches and attention, he doesn't care who it is. My blue ringneck however follows your theory to a T. He loves me, and not my husband.
