Guinea pigs can eat a range of foods, but is important to note that they require a reqular intake of vitamin C. A good source that I've always found the guinea pigs have enjoyed is silverbeet, which you can grow yourself or pick up at a cheap price at your local grocery store.

In terms of the grass and hay you mentioned, you're best off buying a pre-mixed guinea pig food from your local petstore or bulk pet food supplier. It will usually be a mix of a number of things that together provide better nutrition and the roughage that the guinea pig requires to properly digest its food.

Check out the fact sheet here: http://www.burkesbackyard.com.au/factsheets/Others/Guin

Note
that if you feed too many carrots, the urine will be orange, and if you feed too many watery vegetables such as lettuce, the guinea pig may get diarrhoea.

everyone thinks I am mad,and tell me they can survive on just grass and hay.
I sometimes give them celery tops, but find too much does give them the runs,But am glad to hear i am not wasting my time or money!!
