Too much cat poo!!

Posted 737 days ago

I have 6 cats and each summer my yard is a fly farm for obvious reasons. It is too hard to find it all and there is too much to go around and pick it up out of the garden beds. There are about a dozen cats in the street apart from mine too so that doesn't help. What can I use in the soil to break it down quicker? Is there anything?
thanks

I think most people would struggle to cope with 6 cats! Did you mean to have that many or are you looking to re-home some of them? Most councils in Perth only allow 2 or 3 per premises unless you're a registered breeder or foster carer. My number one suggestion would be to keep them indoors and have lots of litter trays available. Your cats will be safe, your garden will be cleaner, your local wildlife will be safer and your neighbours won't have to deal with problems arising from your cats being on their property. But I know cats are strong-willed independent creatures at times so confining so many to your house and reducing their territory will probably lead to tension between them. I think you could sprinkle lime or ash over the faeces in your garden and that would dry them out and reduce the smell but regular use would probably change the pH of your soil and affect your plants. Are all your cats desexed? It's breeding season so other cats will be attracted to all the cats you own. There's nothing you can really do except request the other owners to keep their cats confined indoors or in cat enclosures. Some councils are working through laws that allow people to report nuisance cats if the other cats are really causing a problem.

Get yourself a worm farm. Lots of people with dogs use worm farms for that purpose so I don't see why it wouldn't work for cat droppings.

Okay, I have a suggestion. It's going to be a wild ride though ;)

What about training your cats to use a toilet indoors? It is possible, there are stacks of videos on youtube and just as many guides on google. Here's a link to one guide to start you off:
http://www.catsofaustralia.com/cat-toilet.htmhttp://www.catsofaustralia.com/cat-toil
et.htm

Anyway,
once you have gotten the cats trained (good luck, I know there are 6 of them) what about strategically placing an old toilet somewhere in your backyard?
With any luck you will be able to pick one up for next to nothing, and the cats might feel more comfortable using the toilet after the training. Then, as for the smell - either be inventive and make a cat-poo compost heap under the toilet and cover with some biodegradable kitty litter that will absorb the odor occasionally, or otherwise cleaning up wont be such an issue because it'll all be contained in one area. In theory.

I've never tried this before as I'm not a cat owner, but hey, next time it heats up you might be motivated to give it a go :)
