WHEEZING CHOOKS

Posted 142 days ago

WHY are my chooks wheezing, some have died, the current wheezers are acting normal, running around, eating, scratching, arguing, nesting, laying....oh and are the eggs ok to eat....they are receiving no medication, with exception to LOTS of garlic in their water supply. WHAT CAN I DO!!!!!! Do I need to put them down??? Is it contagious???

Try putting your chook problem to the forum on Backyard Poultry on the web.

There's a few books you can get on keeping chickens that explain different diseases and how to treat them. It sounds pretty serious if several have died, so perhaps it would be a good idea to take them to the vet, especially as it may potentially be transmitted to humans.

One possibility is Newcastle Disease: "The clinical signs of virulent Newcastle disease may start with depression, breathing difficulties and/or a drop in egg production, but they may develop other signs such as nervous tremors, paralysis and green or blood-stained diarrhoea. Birds may become unable to use their legs or wings or hold their head up straight. In some cases, birds can die so quickly that the clinical signs do not show up." http://www.dpiw.tas.gov.au/inter.nsf/WebPages/CART-6FQ8
