Crows eating my chook eggs

Posted 147 days ago

My chooks have come back on the lay but the crows are eating the eggs before I can get to collect them. The chooks lay in a shed about 50 metres from my house, the crows simply go into the shed and take the eggs. Does anyone have a solution for this problem. I don't have a rooster......and don't really want one, but, I wondered if having a rooster would deter the crows?

Crows are tricky, they are very smart. Some ideas for you - a barrier such as a cat door etc that the chooks can still get through, or have you tried to replace the eggs with wooden ones? but you will have to make sure you take out all the real ones, as soon as they are layed.

The oldfasioned way to deal with it is frowned apon now - hang a dead crow on the fence, they will soon leave.

I've had this problem before, and the best thing you can do is to stop it before it becomes a habit. Try locking the chooks in their shed until they've laid, then collect their eggs and let them out. Or try putting dummy eggs in the nestboxes to confuse the crows and stop them coming back.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice. I have been keeping the chooks locked up until they have laid, unfortunately this is the only way I have had success.Crows certainly are clever. I let the chooks out one day and guess what....no eggs.Once again, thank you.

I've had the same problems with crows, very smart birds and cheeky to boot..... I've tried hanging the dead crow on the fence, didn't do a thing other than to earn me the name of "strange lady at the end of the street". My only solution was to hang the light weight fruit tree netting over the doorway to the nesting boxes. I kept it about 6 inches off the ground so the hens would still walk thru. I don't think the crows like the feeling of being trapped behind the netting. They are still always hanging about but I think they just do a daily fly over just in case I forget to drop the net back down after I've collected the eggs. Also just for the record I have 2 roosters and a turkey gobbler none of them deter the crows.....we have found bullets work well but the birds are very difficult to line up, they seem to have an uncany knack of knowing when you are reaching for the gun.....Good luck - hope I have been some help....
