SLATERS are every where... help...

Posted 305 days ago

Well I have lost my patience completly now with the sweet little slaters in my garden
I am prepared to kill on mass
Sorry!!!
Having searched the web I have not really found much help
Building a barrier or using piles of blue Baysol pellets or spraying with eucalyptus and detergent
We have birds, lizards and frogs etc so I dont like to use toxic poisonous pest control
I do worry that our maggies or other birds might eat the Baysol pellets but I'm really getting frustrated that I am losing so many seedlings
I see almost NO snails or slugs but THERE ARE MILLIONS OF SLATERS in my garden
I am pretty sure they are eating my plants I see them climb all over the plants
I know they are supposed to feed on decaying matter it seems mine are eatting live plants too
Love to hear any feedback on this pest problem

They are known a Pill bugs in the States.

Squash they with your feet or hands. Also remove any environments that they like to live in, old timber, pots, roof iron etc.

Cheers Bud.

If you mulch very well and build up your soil with composy woodlice (slaters) will breed up into plagues and then they're behaviour seems to change. They appear to work co-operatively and I swear they dig up bean seedlings and carry them away to eat them at leisure. They ring bark seedling fruit trees too, I know what you're going through.

What you have to do is hold off on soil building and mulch. Dig in what there is. Lay out planks of wood were they'll hole up during the day and then go around with a portable vacuum cleaner or dustpan and brush and put them in a bucket of warm soapy water.

They're a bugger innit :-)

Ha! I thought the slaters in my garden were turning nasty!!
We're told to mulch well and gardens look good with rocks and timber, now it seems the only real cure would be to have a bare yard!!!

i have read that a bait you can try for slaters is one part pyrethrum to two parts flour (can be wet or dry). Put it near the woodheaps etc where they shelter during the day. It has to be in a covered container because the light will make it ineffective. I haven't tried it yet but I will soon, because we have 1000's of slaters too since I mulched everywhere.

Hi. Hortico produce a product called Lawn Beetle and Slater Killer. It comes as granules and is recommended you put it into or under your pots where the slaters are. I haven't tried this product but have a container on hand ready just incase. Gardening can be ever so frustrating with all the different challenges, but for some reason when it is a passion we never give up. Bye, good luck.
