Itchy Dog

Posted 354 days ago

Looking for suggestions to stop itching on Red cattle/border collie. Has been on cortisone tablets, has never had fleas. Has regular baths. Lives in tropics. Have changed food to all natural products no preservatives. Have been to Vet. Scratches more in the hotter months. Have removed all plants from the garden dogs are allergic too. Has very red skin in effected areas. Please help, hate seeing her uncomfortable. Someone suggested antihystamines that people use. have not tried this yet.

Have you tried for information on the forum 'Dogzonline?' They know everything that there is to know about dogs and should be able to offer you some help.

I agree that there is nothing worse than having to watch a pet that is in pain.

I had a rottwieler that had the same probem and we took him to every vet and each one told us something different. then one day we found a vet he was an old man with lots of years experiance, and as soon as he saw him he asked if there were fox's close to our property. They carry a mite that goes under there skin and he needed special treatment to get rid of it. A few days later he was as good as new. At one stage I thought he would die ,he was scatching so much, and he was very depressed. Hope this helps even if its not from a fox maybe other animals can carry it. It was also quit bad in the hotter months. good luck

My cattle dog X has had severe leg-pit pitch underneath his body - has received good relief from Aloe Vera spray & cream. Not cured though - I'll be trying the cider vinegar tip!

Talk to an experienced vet about skin allergies, a lot of dogs are allergic to the bacteria they produce in their own skin. My Pomeranian used to suffer with itchy skin and I used a human shampoo called Neutrogena Theoretic Shampoo T/GEL (Extra Strength) available at your pharmacy, most only stock T/Gel, however there is a product called T/Gel extra strength. I believe your dog may have a seboretic type condition. I used it on my Pomeranian twice and he never looked back. Years ago approx 20, a veterinary pharmaceutical company used to make a product called pragmatar for itchy dogs, I used it frequently on an itching German shepherd, although it helped it did not clear the condition for good. The pragmatar product is no longer made, however the Human T/Gel extra strength worked a treat for for my little Pomeranian dog, speak to you vet about it anyway particularly the issue of possible seborrhea.

Have a friend that has a staffy and it had a very bad case of itchiness - she went back to the breeder and was told to use Dettol in water on the skin.
The recipe is approx one litre water with a splash of dettol -remember less is always more- rub into hair and skin whenever you think of it with a chux.
Worked like a charm. hope it works for you -worth a try.

We have started him on the cider vinegar today with a few drop in each of his water bowls. What is the maximum amout you can give and can I also put it in his food, he will eat anything and not taste it.

I dont think you would need to feed it to him, I think it is more to do with the PH levels of the skin and countering the effect of soaps and other things.

I have used antihistamines on my dog before for skin rashes and allergies and they worked a treat. Stopped her itching enough for it to heal. This was for short term use though (turned out she was allergic to a plant I had there) so your vet should advise you if its a suitable use for your problem. They should also be able to give you a list of what brands are acceptable for use on dogs as well.
