Chickens

Posted 692 days ago

I have 2 chickens, a hen and a rooster. They are about 4 and a half months and my hen will start laying soon. I have never had chickens before and do not know what feed they need. I have poultry feed which is basically cleaned oats and wheat. But I want good eggs and do not know what else they need in their diet. Also we live in suburbs and my rooster crows every morning at 6:00am and about 3:00pm and he crows non stop and when he does stop it is about an hour after he has started. I have tried everything as I am worried neighbours will complain because even I get sick of hearing him. What can I do to stop him or at least limit his crowing, please help.

Nicole,Firstly ,unless you want to breed chickens I would suggest you find a new home for the rooster, and buy another hen.
The only way to stop him ,is to put him in a small low area where he cannot stretch his neck to be able to crow.
Chooks love all types of food, corn on the cob, water melon, rock melon, grapes (cut up small),lettuce, mine eat wheat bix mixed with a bit of water,Carrot tops and parsley. Barastoc, have great pellets and mixed grains

Nicole, i do agree with the views of your last reply from Dawn52, in regards to the rooster, if your not going to breed, then it would be better for you to sell or give the bird a new home, also if you have room in your yard, may i suggest you let the hens have a free run of the yard, who knows you might find you get better coloured yokes in the eggs, which in turn gives a better taste

Grow some silverbeet especially for your chooks, they love it. All greens give the eggs that wonderful orange colour! Now that sounds like double dutch, guess we would wonder if we got green yolks!!

And let them wander around - if you don't have much space, let them out for at least 20 mins and day and watch them if you don't want them digging up other things. Or you could have a moving pen for them.
