blue tongue lizards Posted 807 days ago I have found a couple of blue tongue lizards in the garden with what appears to be eye infections, is this normal and is there anything I can do for them other than bathing the eyes? |

RE: blue tongue lizards Posted 806 days ago It's not normal in a healthy lizard. Do you mean their eyes look like they've been glued shut? Are they in otherwise good condition or a bit skinny? Have you noticed any discharge coming from their noses? There has been a newish disease discovered in WA called "bobtail flu" that has reduced populations of bobtails/shinglebacks and bluetongues. I'm not sure whether it's made its way to Victoria but it is highly contagious between lizards (appears airborne) and it's unusual that you would have two sick lizards in your garden. If they look sick then you should contact your nearest wildlife rehabilitation centre for specialised treatment. If it's just the eyes involved then a bit of warm salty water to loosen up their eyelids couldn't hurt. |

RE: blue tongue lizards Posted 806 days ago no discharge was noted from the nose or mouth, the right eye on one was pussy, and the other has pussy discharge and cloudy. The lizards were in good condition and not skinny... |

RE: blue tongue lizards Posted 805 days ago Hmmm, sounds like a bacterial infection. The one with the cloudy eye may have an injury that's gotten infected. A vet should be able to prescribe some antibiotic eye drops/cream and I don't think the medication would cost very much. If you can find a vet who's had experience with reptiles that would be better. Reptiles take a long time to heal because they're cold blooded which unfortunately can mean they can lose an eye to infection. |
