Neighbour's cat is a pooper! Posted 129 days ago We live in a cul-de-sac where just about everyone but us owns a cat. Our yard has become the public toilet, and we're out of ideas. We've tried napthalene flakes, chilli flakes, citronella, and ready-made animal deterrents to stop the pooping. Nothing has worked! We like cats but they poo right unde our windows and are sick of the smell. Is there a plant we could put around as a deterrent? |

Lavendula (Lavenda)
Coleonema pulchrum (Diosma)
May be worth a try. _________ from little things, big things grow! |

RE: Neighbour's cat is a pooper! Posted 117 days ago Hi Skimp78
How annoying, if only people would keep cats indoors or on a harness. I've had a similar problem of being Cat Central, my own enviro cat was too frightened to wander in our own yard.
I managed to cut down the amount of trespassing and marking/pooing but not totally deter 2 of the cats.
I've found that the method below works but you need to keep it up.The aim is to remove the scent left behind which marks the spot as a toilet for the next cat. Faeces and urine have cells of fats which tend to hang around scentwise. You are also claiming back your own yard with your own scent, in a way, just by dealing with it.
1. Remove poo ($1 beach spade works well) or wee
2. Sluice area with half bucket of water with detergent
3. Spray area well with water and vinegar mix. Ratio H2O : Vinegar = 4 : 1.
You have now cleansed the area
4. Finally, spray area with good slug of tea tree oil or euc oil mixed with water and dash of alcohol in spray bottle. Shake well each time.
Cats and dogs hate this smell. You need to respray the area maybe fortnightly or weekly.
If they have been spraying the door mat - get rid of itand wait awhile before getting a new one. Cleanse the area as above. Remember to cleanse up to 30-40 cm on walls - male cats spray up. Also works with lawns and dogs.
I actually removed an old diosma which was hopelessly wee drenched from dogs and replaced it with rosemary. Prickly plants also deter animals. Note their routes of entry and exits and mess up their habits. Use gravel or mesh on ground as unattractive mulch around precious plants.
Good Luck! |

RE: Neighbour's cat is a pooper! Posted 101 days ago I live in a group of townhouses (about 20) and have limited garden - i have two dogs and everyone else seems to have cats! Aside from the issues i have to the wildlife and nature in the area, they were pooping/scenting the mulched area in my front yard (my whole front yard is mulched- turned into a giant kitty-litter box)not very nice to walk into your front door! It got so bad I couldnt open the windows in my place!
I tried everything too, even installed a sprinkler system i could turn on when i actually caught the buggers doing 'the do'
A friend of mine (who owns cats responsibly) told me that they dont like to sratch in their kitty litter when their claws get caught. So I laid chicken wire under my mulch (only a thin layer on top) and put plastic bird spikes from bunnings under the chicken wire randomly. (these arent cruel, they are quite large but transparent so not too obvious) Two weeks and doing well - i bought a black cat cut out that sits in my garden... ineffectual, but a girlfriend said she had one but an Owl, which works for her |
