baby brown snake or legless lizard????

Posted 247 days ago

Whilst weeding around my melaleauca totem seedlings today, after first giving them a good soak with the hose, I came across a tiny 2 to 3 inch baby brown snake. It's not the first time I've seen the baby snakes around here. Sometimes I wonder if maybe some of them might be legless lizards???? How would you tell them apart???? This tiny creature looked a little different from the other tiny snakes I've seen (though it was slightly smaller too).

Even the hard, dull, dry ground harbours life - which is brought to the surface with the fresh touch of drenching rain (or the humble watering can).

Try Google Images for pictures of both.

Yes google pic and find a pic that enables you to compare the head scales, you might be able to identify the subject in question by counting the number of scale and by the patern od the scales, good luck

Get some mittens and protective gear on , go up to the snake, open its mouth and see.
Legless lizards dont have fangs, to provent the thing from biting hold either side of its head.

Legless lizards also have remedial legs, (Skin flaps) towards the rear, they are not as agresive as brown snakes but that is not a good indication, I would say let it be and it will wander off.

1 - Broad, fleshy tongue
2 - Ear-opening behind eye
3 - Two or more rows of belly scales
4 - Tail as long as to much longer than body
5 - If uniform body pattern present, then longitudinal (stripes versus crossbands in Oz snakes.

Hope this helps

I think the easiest way is to see whether it has movable eyelids (snakes have a clear scale over their eyes instead of eyelids). If it blinked at you or you can see it has eyelids then it's not a snake.

Ive always thought that legless lizards are long and thin, more like a long scaly earthworm.

Dont quote me on this - im no expert.
