Forget the flea collar, powder and vinegar, been there done that doesn't work, I use frontline liquid drops from the vet, works a treat, no more fleas.

Ire, That is my problem, been using frontline for five years and all of a sudden it stopped working. Few people on here agree. I rang the customer service line and they haven't answered, surprise!!!! I wondered if they had built up a resistance to it. That's why I am looking for alternatives. Been to vet, he said, put two lots on and I did, didn't help. Had house bombed and put another dose on but still didn't work. Getting really frustrated! Thanks for suggestion

lime gets rid of fleas. spread it everywhere, on the dirt, concrete, dogs beds etc. and a couple of days to a week and they should be gone. then just hose away or sweep. lime is also good for some soils, so it won't hurt. I have previously used this method (when I had a dog) and it worked a treat. I also then used Advantage - another brand of flea killer.

My vet told me that Frontline wasn't nearly as effective as Advantage is for cats. I have 6 cats and get one Large Dog dose for about $11. This separates into exactly the right amount to treat my 6 cats, and it's much cheaper than getting them each their own dose. I have a syringe with a mark on it that tells me exactly how much to extract for each cat. (Advantage for Dogs is the same formula as the cat one, by the way.)
At first I treated them once a month, as directed, but found it seemed to be residual and I could gradually lengthen the time between treatments. Now I only need to treat them about once every 3 months or so, and none of them have had fleas for over 5 years. Very happy kitties. I alternate between Frontline and Advantage for our dog, and use a tick collar purchased from the vet, who said this was the best way to prevent ticks. Most tick spot-on treatments are really only effective for 2 weeks, the collar lasts 2 months and is about $12. I live on a farm in an area where paralysis ticks are prevalent, and we've had no problems so far. I even have tick collars on my alpacas!
I've never tried vinegar as a flea treatment or preventative. Doesn't it make them smell awful?

Hi there, forget all your frontline and advantage, powders potions vinegars etc. I have just found a product called " Capstar". There are 6 tablets in a packet,they are available for dogs, cats small and large. I have a chihuahua and a shitszu, once a month I give them one tablet, within 30 minutes the fleas begin to die.
The medication gets into the animals bloodstream, when the fleas bite they die. My girls were so tormented by these little pests,they used to cry Frontline was useless, maybe the manufacturer should do a bit more research to improve their product, but too late for me, I'm sticking to CAPSTAR Take it from me, TRY IT.You can buy it at your local Vet, or you can buy it on line from the CAPSTAR web site,the price starts at about $12.I think it's a bargain 6 months flea free for $12.

I swear by tea-tree oil. (Soluble) I put about a lid-full into a spray bottle and mix it with water.
It is safe for puppies, and it repels ticks too. also good for ringworm, at a stranger mix.

Capstar works well but use lime if you have patches of dry dirt anywhere. (like...under the house) Otherwise your pet keeps picking up new fleas from those areas.

You can also try a teaspoon of the cider vinegar in the dogs drinking water. It is supposed to work from the inside to deter the fleas.

Never heard of the cider vinegar before, the capstar sounds good, I have flea collars on both my cats never had a problem with fleas inside or out, though the male cat has to be bathed occasionly as he is a grot, we have a special shampoo for cats and dogs with ti tree oil in it works a treat on the fleas.

The vinegar does NOT work, guys, and in addition is very harmful to the stomach lining, use a fresh garlic instead, crush it and add to individual meals at least 2-3 times a week BUT go easy with older animals as their liver will not be able to digest it very well and could end up in a mild asthma attack

We have had a lot of success using bicarb soda with our 2 Viszlas. We have sprinkled it on their bedding and in even on the carpet and tiles when we had a flea infestation (twice) in the house. Also put essential oils on the dogs, in places they cant reach to lick. It worked a treat.

I have heard of adding raw garlic to their food, but haven't tried it.

I had the same problem with Frontline suddenly not working, the vet suggested changing to Advantix and have had no fleas or ticks since the change. Its a little dearer than the Frontline, but it works wonders for my dogs.

Start with a teaspoon of cider vinegar in the water dish & every week up the amount, they won't like it at first. Try sprinkling brewers yeast on their food as well.

Marie-Ann, if you plant heaps of mint in your backyard, you'll quickly discover that the remedy is far worse than the complaint!!! Fleas might come and go, but mint is forever....everywhere.

Hi, have had real bad flea problems up here, lime doesnt work,vinegar doesnt work, dose the dogs with capstar, wash all bedding in hot water & bleach, do dog pens & kennels with ant kill water ground first & water in well after sprinkling with ant kill, do verandahs & concrete areas with bleach.

Mausy,it doesn't matter how often you treat your animals for fleas,it won't work unless you clean the bedding and surrounding areas as well.Advantix is the best for animals. When you wash the bedding put eucalyptus oil in the rinse water and if you spread common salt around the yard and any place your dog plays they will soon disappear.Don't put salt on carpets or you will have a wet soggy mess to clean up.Good Luck

Here in South Africa, we have been experiencing the same problems.

Initially Advantage, which I utilised on all my dogs and the cat, worked like a charm and then suddenly it had no effect. Cape Talk Radio 567, ran a program on Fleas last summer, and the general concensus was that the Fleas had become immune to this medicament, a fact which was later confirmed by a "very brave" Vet!

I then started using Frontline, which also worked wonderfully until the Fleas also became immune to its ingredient combination.

Most recently I have been using FRONTLINE Plus which seems to do the trick. But for how long remains the buring question .....

OOPS sorry I forgot to mention that Capstar was great, provided one's own dogs never came into contact with other dogs, or cats for that matter.

This is totally impossible unless one never takes ones animals out for walks beyong the perimeters of one on property.

The minute one of my dogs comes into contact with a "Flea Taxi" it signs up to join the ranks, of those employed as conveyancers of the old and ancient species known to the Romans as PULEX IRRITANS! (regardless of whether they be members of the sub-species of Pulex Carnis or Pulex Felix!)

There is a new product out called Comfortis that is a monthly tablet that seems to be working extremely well on fleas.
I tried so many different flea elimination methods till my vet recommended this new one.
My flea problem has almost disappeared thank goodness.

i have 2 dogs one female she is good and has no problem with whatever i use the other a male has tried frontline and advantage no luck been to vet tried the twice treatment no luck tried fennel garlic you name it we've tried it am going mad trying to figure sme thing new out keep up the good work will try all your ''patients'' out many thanks from a hair pulling mistress tiger

I have been using "comfortis" for last couple of months on my cavalliers. Brilliant!! About time a flea tablet became available... Dead fleas within half hour... Brilliant for the dogs and brilliant for me... Great investment for the price.. highly reccommend it...

Hi, have not heard of cider vinegar for fleas but my poor border collie used to get hot spots if he got one flea on him. in the end after trying all sorts of things--capstar seemed to only last a day--I found that mixing a teaspoon of dried garlic, that you get for animals from a produce store, into his food each night worked a treat. As said before tho you must treat the surrounds with lime or something as fleas(or their eggs) can live in the soil for up to 10 years....a daunting thought!
