Dog wont eat

Posted 667 days ago

Does anybody believe in the old saying 'if a dog is hungry enough it will eat'? My dogs are on the Eukanuba food and one of them likes it but the other just refuses to eat it at all. It has been 2 days since he has eaten anything but a few nibbles. They are both Maltese/shitzus. Should I perservere or should I put him back on his usual diet that made him really fat and smelly? The dog that is eating it has made tremendous progress on it. What does anyone think? Maureen

Hi Maureen,
If it were my dog I would persevere with the Eukanuba food, especially if it's overweight. But if you're really concerned about it call your vet and see what advise they give you. I wouldn't fret too much at this stage, particularly since its been nibbling at it occasionally.
Good Luck!

Try feeding them out of sight of each other, and only offer a VERY small amount to the fussy one, and nothing else. If it refuses, remove the food, and don't offer anything else til next normal feed time. If it's still refusing after about two days, a vet might need to take a look. Good luck with it.

Condolances for your budgie!

I don't know if it is the same for dogs as it is for cats but they say you should introduce the new food gradually. Mix in the new with the old starting with just a little and increasing every day or two until it is all the new. Do this over a few weeks. If you call your vets office the nurse should be able to advise as well.

I have two cats and if there is a food that they don't like i don't feed it to them, yes they are spoiled, but that is why I have them. I figure that I don't eat things I don't like why should they? Also since they can't speak there could be something in the food that doesn't agree with them or perhaps it's off.

Good luck.

I would persist with the Eukanuba. I went through a similar thing with my Poodle x when I switched his food.
He went 3 days without eating more than a nibble. The 'trick' is to be strong and remove the food after a reasonable time and effort AND not let them eat anything between meals. Remember that in the wild (yes a long time ago for our lap dogs but principle still applies) dogs would go 2-3 days between meals, and unless there are other illnesses to take into account, this fasting won't affect them in the long run - AND THERE'S A BONUS your dog will see you as a strong pack leader and be more responsive to training - my boy just got his first pass in national dog trials.
