Posted 746 days ago

What products are the most effective for treating mange on dogs/puppies? Does anyone still use Malawash?
My Stafford shire Terrier is 5months and has slight areas of mange on his head and legs.I hate watching him scratch and am constantly apply a cream from the vet(pyohex)What else can I do for him?

Is it actually mange (which is caused by mites) or dermatitis caused by something else? In the case of mange I think you might need some sort of anti-parasitic medication to kill the mites but the vet would have prescribed some if they thought it would help. My staffy X gets dermatitis from contact with the grass at certain times of the year. He had licked the fur from his paws and his belly was a bit pink so I took him to the vet and was given medicated (Pyohex) shampoo to prevent any bacterial infections on his irritated skin and advised to go to my local pharmacy for human hayfever medication (she said it would be cheaper than antihistamines from the clinic). I give him half a tablet of C-zine a day (he's nearly 30kg) when I see him licking or scratching himself and it works really well. I've stopped using the medicated shampoo since I thought it was a bit much for his condition (plus he hates it) and gone back to oatmeal (Aloveen) shampoo. Maybe talk to your vet about antihistamines for your pup if he's not too small? The ones they have might make him drowsy (my parent's dog has them when he gets stung by a bee) but I haven't noticed any side effects with my dog using ones from the pharmacy. Definitely don't use any human medications without consulting your vet first.

I found a old dog with terrible mange and nothing worked I found olive oil to work really well and it wont hurt them if they lick it.I rubbed it into the skin 3 times a day and within 2 month the skin is soft and hair was growing back.My vet was suprised by the results.

Its all to do with the diet. Get a formulated biscuit mix or wet food from the vet for sensitive skin, worked on my dog who was almost bald from scratching and had a bad diet.
do not feed anything else (including bones) while you are feeding the special diet. No treats at all.
