Chicken Coops/Houses

Posted 770 days ago

Can someone recommend to me somewhere I can buy Chicken Coops/Houses that are made in Australia or even Adelaide? The ones I have seen on E-Bay are made overseas (A friend of mine bought one and it came from China). I have been inspired to do more organic gardening after receiving Don Burke's Organic Gardening book for Christmas

The last chicken coop I built was built out of scrap, there was a scrap merchant at the tip and he would pick the best out of everything that was taken to the tip. Now if your handy and have the time why not build your own then it's definately made in Oz and the chooks won't know any different, my husband did help of course and we used tea chests for nests. We were able to make a much bigger shed than a bought one, we ended up with a chook shed about the size of a garage, chookens loved it. It had a large netting window in each end for breeze and view, and perches throughout. Good Luck and Happy New Year!

I live in Adelaide aswell and Im not very handy I would like to own chickens but building a coop is not within my skills level. I did think of buying a bird aivery and then making a few minor adjustments but my problem is getting it into my backyard I dont have a wide gate it wont fit. If you have a way into your yard that could work. I am on the constant look out for a cheap and easy way to do this as I only want 2 chikens I will keep trying and let you know. A flat pac chicken cage would be ideal with easy instructions.

You can purchase sheets of heavy duty galvanised wire mesh, cut the mesh to size with a pair of bolt cutters or an angle grinder fitted with a cut-off disk and then join the cut sheets along the edges with heavy duty black (UV stable) cable ties. There are a lot of choices available as far as a roof & walls etc go. If you have the coop in a corner for example you may wish to simply lay some corrugated iron on top with a few bricks to hold it down. Depends on the size of the coop and how much money you want to spend as to what you end up with.

I've had chooks now for about 3 months and after seeing the price for a chook coop on ebay and how small they are, decided to make our own. I bought a large marine ply dog kennel on ebay for $25, then purchased timber and wire from Bunnings. It took longer and cost more than I'd expected (about $500) but now we have a large coop (1.8m x 1.8m plus the kennel) that is secure from foxes and dry in wet weather (we put a laserlight roof on the coop.) We put a shelf in the back of the kennel for a nesting box, and two pieces of timber across the kennel for roosts. The chooks roam free in the garden all day and put themselves to bed at night. They are so entertaining to watch and are starting to lay eggs which are so fresh and delicious! They fertilise the garden and eat some of the vege scraps. Great pets!

You can hire chickens and coops, look in the back of the magazine for more details, they are small portable coops. You can buy them if you decide thats right for you.

I build and sell a mobile chicken motel, designed for people who wish to free range chooks in the backyard.
If in Newcastle come visit me at the farmers markets for some advice.

Hi Robey4168,
I imagine this email is way too late to help you but I thought that you may be interested in looking at what I use.
It is a combination of Chickens, Vegetables and Raised corrugated iron garden beds.
