Best Chickens & Ducks

Posted 892 days ago

Hi Everyone,
We are in the process of building a chicken/vege garden compound and I am interested in what people think of the following chicken and duck breeds (I call it a compound as we have foxes, neighbours wandering cats & dogs, Little Eagles and even a visiting Wedge Tail Eagle pair that may harm the chickens plus there are rabbits, wallabys & kangaroos that may eat the vegies - please note that we are very happy to share our property with our native guests but not our animals or vegies).
We are looking at keeping a mixture of the following:
Ducks:
Silver Appleyard - a breeding pair
Chickens (hens only):
Australorp (blue colour)
Sussex
Wyandotte
Bantams (hens only):
Sebright
Pekin
Silkie
Any information is greatly appreciated.
:)

We have Isa Brown Chooks and they are the best layers of all. They lay everyday and on average their eggs weigh about 80 grams and the yolks are such a rich orange colour. Yum !!!

Thanks DMC,

What do you feed your IB's to get such large eggs with the rich orange yolks? Or is that normal for them?

:)
